Description:
German qualifier and former top-20 player Anna-Lena Groenefeld could very well be the Cinderella story of the US Open thus far.
Not only did she breeze past No. 11 seed Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets in the first round, but she followed it up two rounds later with a straight-set victory over another seeded player, No. 17 Alize Cornet, 6-4, 7-5 to earn a spot in the fourth round.
The win marks the first time in her career that Groenefeld has reached the Round of 16 at the US Open, and this time she had to fight her way into the main draw as a qualifier.
